PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are looking for the driver of a pickup truck who struck and killed a bicyclist early Friday morning in West Philadelphia. Officials say the truck has been recovered.

Authorities say this is the 15th fatal hit-and-run crash this year — up by two from last year.

It happened around 1 a.m. on 52nd Street near Wyalusing Avenue.

Chief Inspector Scott Small said 28-year-old Nyier Cunningham was riding his bike just two blocks away from his home when he was hit.

“After the pickup truck struck the person on the bicycle, we’re being told that pickup truck made a U-turn, then fled the scene north on 52nd Street and made a left-hand turn,” he said.

Small said it’s possible the truck dragged the victim.

Police said Friday afternoon that the truck was found near the corner of Belmont Avenue and Thompson Street in West Philadelphia.

The truck knocked Cunningham off his bike. He suffered a severe head injury and broken legs. He died at the hospital just before 5 a.m.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver. Tips can be made anonymously online.
