Worker charged with accidentally shooting group home resident in face

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man has been charged with accidentally shooting a resident in the face at the Montgomery County group home where he worked.

Kashaan Moses worked at the home, which is run by JEVS Human Services, for years. It is one of many adult residential homes for people with special needs.

According to the criminal complaint, 25-year-old Moses brought a recently purchased handgun to work with him on April 9.

Police say he told responding officers that he was working an overnight shift and didn’t want to leave the gun in the car.

Around 8 a.m., Moses was sitting on the couch and tried to clear the chamber of the gun when it accidentally went off and hit a resident in the face, police say.

The resident lost his eye and remains hospitalized. He had several medical procedures related to the shooting.

The house on Rosemont Avenue, just outside Lansdale, is home to three people with disabilities.

Moses received a permit to carry a gun in February and bought the gun about a week before the shooting. The complaint says he did not take any firearm safety classes.

Moses is free on $25,000 unsecured bond. He is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and reckless endangerment.

His lawyer, Daniel Schatz, said Moses has been cooperating with the investigation. He said the entire incident is unfortunate and by all accounts accidental.
