PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal carjacking in Northern Liberties Thursday night. They say two masked men assaulted the victim, stole his SUV, and left him for dead.

Close to 10 p.m., at Third and Cambridge streets, the victim was sitting in a parked 2023 Toyota Highlander waiting for a family member. That’s when the men, on a motorcycle or a dirt bike, drove up next to the SUV, according to police.

“One of them pulled the 60-year-old driver from the driver seat and there was some sort of struggle and altercation,” Chief Inspector Scott Small told news crews on the scene. “[The victim] ended up lying on the street. When the first arriving officers and medics showed up, he was bleeding from his head.”

The attackers fled — one in the SUV, and the other on the bike, police said.

Medics rushed the victim to the hospital, where he died within an hour. He was not immediately identified. Police only said he had a Center City address.

Later that night, police were able to track down the stolen Highlander in Camden, New Jersey, where it had been abandoned. Police said they are looking for fingerprints and DNA.

There are surveillance cameras in the neighborhood as well, and police will be looking through footage as they try to identify and find the two men involved in this deadly carjacking.
