PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating a shooting in Center City overnight that left a man dead.
Police found the 26-year-old victim on the ground, bleeding, when they responded to a call around 12:30 a.m.
He was shot near the intersection of Juniper and Chancellor streets, near popular bars and restaurants, according to initial police reports. And based on the shell casings investigators found, they say at least 21 shots were fired.
“He was shot multiple times to his chest and torso; once in the leg. He was completely unresponsive lying on the sidewalk,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.
The man died at the hospital. He has not been publicly identified yet.
The victim had a lot of money on him, but police are not sure of the motive.
“He had a large amount of cash. How much, I’m not sure at this time, but he did have a substantial amount of cash in his pockets,” Small said. “So we’re not certain if robbery was a motive. It doesn’t appear that the money was taken.”
In surveillance video, police say they saw a blue pickup truck leaving the scene. Witnesses say it looked like those involved in the shooting got away in that truck.
CORRECTION: A previous version of this story cited initial police reports that had the victim's age as 27. He was 26.
