PHILADLEPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia man pleaded guilty to striking and killing a beloved neighbor of his while he fled police nearly two years ago.
Raheem Geathers, 38, was parallel parking his car along Master Street near 7th Street in North Philadelphia on May 28, 2019. At the same moment, a police officer was driving by and recognized him.
The officer knew Geathers had a warrant out for his arrest on rape charges, so he stopped and confronted him.
Prosecutors say that’s when Geathers took off, driving at first on the sidewalk, hitting Dorothy Wright.
He ended up crashing the car, jumping out and running for about three blocks when eventually Geathers stopped and was arrested, officials say.
According to prosecutors, Geathers began saying "I hit Miss Dot. How is Miss Dot?"
Wright, 63, later died.
Geathers pleaded guilty to homicide by vehicle and accident involving death, and will be sentenced in December. He could spend more than a decade in prison, but he is still awaiting trial on the rape case.
Geathers had another case involving an accident involving injury or death, fleeing or attempting to flee an officer and simple assault back in 2015. He also has several other driving related charges on his record.
