PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The number of deaths from drug overdoses in the United States has been increasing at a startling rate. In 2020, more than 91,000 Americans died from drug overdoses.
Incidents of drug overdoses cross all economic and racial lines. According to CDC statistics, no specific group is immune.
One of the main reasons for the spike is one specific drug, called fentanyl, which is 50 times more potent than heroin.
Another issue affecting the numbers: Drug dealers often sell other products, like cocaine or methamphetamine, laced with fentanyl.
Individually, people can avoid the risk of fentanyl overdose by taking steps to lessen their dependence on illegal drugs, or defeat the habit altogether. And there are behavioral therapy programs and treatments that can help minimize withdrawal symptoms.
Collectively, one of the best things to do is recognize the medical problems at play and to work toward a solution.
