PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — There has been a great deal of discussion about a vaccine for monkeypox.
At present time, there is a vaccine called Jynneos that is available. It requires an initial shot and a booster. The vaccine can help prevent cases, and if given within several days after exposure, it can reduce symptoms.
Monkeypox is spread primarily through skin-to-skin contact. According to a recent report of more than 500 infections, about nine out of 10 cases were among gay or bisexual men, mainly through sexual activity. This emphasizes the need for safe sex practices and ongoing public education.
Symptoms of monkeypox usually appear within two weeks of exposure and can include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes and a rash that looks like pimples or blisters.
