PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The iconic Melrose Diner, which has been closed since a fire last year, will be demolished and replaced with an apartment building.

According to Philadelphia Licenses and Inspections, a zoning permit was issued Wednesday for 1501-11 Snyder Ave., the address of Melrose Diner in South Philadelphia.

Plans indicate that a five-story mixed-use building with a basement will be built at that location.

Ninety-four residential units are expected to be built, which will include a green roof and a residential roof deck. A sit-down restaurant will occupy the first floor of the building next to the residential lobby.

There’s no word yet on whether that restaurant will have a legacy connection to Melrose Diner.
