Montco officials: Department of State email about mail-in ballots is causing some confusion

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Montgomery County elections officials say hundreds of thousands of mail-in ballots are either on the way or will soon be on the way to voters. But the state's computer system is causing some unneeded confusion.

Montgomery County residents who had signed up for mail-in ballots got an email on Sept. 21 saying their ballot was in the mail.

The message says to call the county’s voter services office if it doesn’t arrive within 10 to 14 days.

“That email was generated by the Department of State and it was inadvertently sent out several weeks ago,” explained Lee Soltysiak, Montgomery County’s chief clerk.

Soltysiak says that emails created a lot of unnecessary confusion, making people think ballots were printed and have been sitting at the post office or lost in transit.

“And that is just not the case. People should feel confident that their ballots have begun to be mailed beginning last week,” he said.

He says the county’s first ballots went out Sep. 30 and by early next week. They expect 200,000 ballots will have been sent, and he says once mailed, ballots are arriving within three days.

He reminds voters, in addition to mailing ballots, they can also use one of the 11 ballot drop-boxes, the four satellite offices, or return their ballot to the main voter services office in Norristown.
