Woman, 5-year-old son recovering after gunman fires into home

The pair were lying in bed when the shots were fired

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — In Kensington, a woman and her 5-year-old son are recovering in the hospital after they were struck by bullets fired into their home Thursday night.

Around 8:30 p.m., someone fired more than 20 gunshots outside two homes on East Venango Street, just south of Kensington Avenue, police say. The 28-year-old mom and the little boy were lying in bed at the time.

"A bullet came through the lower window frame, went into the house, and struck mom and son,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

She was hit in the thigh, and a bullet grazed the boy's arm. They were both taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.

Small said at least three bullets went through a neighbor’s home, as well, where another family was inside, but no one there was injured.

Investigators are taking a look at surveillance video.

"You do see a silver sedan going eastbound pull up in front of the house, and shooters were firing from the front passenger-door window and the rear passenger-door window," Small said.

No one has been arrested, and it is unclear who the intended target was.
