Mother killed, teen injured in Northeast Philadelphia double shooting

Investigators believe it could be domestic violence-related

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A mother in Northeast Philadelphia’s Castor Gardens neighborhood was killed Monday night in front of her teenage son, who was also shot. Police have a person of interest they’re speaking to.

Tasena Jennings and her 17-year-old child were inside their home on Magee Avenue near Oxford Avenue a little after 10:30 p.m. Police say at that time, two men came into the house and shot Jennings in the head and chest.

A brief struggle ensued, and police said the teen tried to block the door when the two men shot again, striking the teen in his stomach.

Officers were called to the scene and scooped the teen, taking him to the hospital. He has been listed in critical condition, but was expected to survive.

Those officers found Jennings dead on her kitchen floor.

Authorities were speaking Tuesday to one man, believed to be a person of interest, as they work to figure out the motive.

Investigators said they believe it’s related to domestic violence.

This mother is the first woman killed in 2022 in Philadelphia.

Domestic violence killings in Philadelphia were up over 100% last year from 2020. More than five dozen women were gunned down last year.
