PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Some murals in Philadelphia may look a little different as they reflect the guidelines set in place because of the pandemic.

Marian Anderson's famed voice might have been a little muffled if she had ever tried to sing while wearing a mask, but officials are hoping the message from her mural at 17th and Fitzwater streets is loud and clear.

“We have put masks on different figures and murals throughout the city,” said Jane Golden with Mural Arts Philadelphia.

The organization adorned four large murals and a number of smaller ones with masks to help send out the message that masks are important, as well as encourage everybody to wear one.

Golden said to date, they've done over 5,000 public decals about wearing masks and social distancing.

“I think that area is an important tool of advocacy. I think it's a really important way to convey a message, because people are looking up at something that they thought they knew. But they're seeing it again in a new light,” she explained.

She said it took nearly a month for them to figure out how to paint masks on the murals without harming the art.

“It took a village to do this work, and we're grateful to all our partners,” she said.
