After years of mismanaged mail, neighbors demand accountability from Germantown’s only post office

Residents say mail is slow, lost, stolen or wrongly delivered

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — After decades of reporting problems with their local mail service, Germantown neighbors are working to hold the post office accountable.

State Rep. Darisha Parker, who represents the neighborhood, rallied alongside them for a second time on Wednesday in front of Germantown’s only post office, located at 5209 Greene St. They say mail has been slow, lost, stolen and delivered to incorrect addresses.

“One person trying to handle everyone or there’s no one up there and a whole line,” said neighbor Jay Jones.

Fellow neighbor Bridget, who did not disclose her last name, said this location has not been up to par for ages.

“I don’t come here unless I have to because of my address,” she said.

The residents say they want more accountability, more staff for the post office, and, of course, they simply want their mail.

Parker is taking the issue to the highest levels of local government because, she said, the community deserves some answers.

“You have people who have complained about this location over and over and over and nothing has happened,” she said. “Accountability is high and we want our complaints to be heard and we want a timeline.”

KYW Newsradio reached out to the Greene Street storefront and the Eastern Area of the U.S. Postal Service for comment. The Eastern Area office said, in part, “We are very concerned when customers state they are not pleased with the service they expect.”

“I shouldn’t have constituents telling me their mail was in the middle of the street,” Parker added. “That’s unacceptable.”
