Burlington County shelter hosts Super Bowl party for homeless citizens

Beacon of Hope’s executive director hopes the game helps displaced people “forget about their troubles”

MT. HOLLY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — When Super Bowl LVI kicks off Sunday evening, a Burlington County shelter hopes it will bring smiles to the faces of its residents.

Beacon of Hope in Mt. Holly is getting ready for a special party for football's biggest event.

Pastor Darlene Trappier, the organization's executive director, is making preparations for a super party for homeless people.

"Life has already beaten them up," said Trappier.

"People do not care about the homeless because they see them as part of the pavement, but I see them as human."

Trappier got permission from nearby Saint Andrews Episcopal Church to use one of its rooms for events, and now some 30 displaced individuals are expected to cheer on their favorite team Sunday.

"I have an overhead projector, and I'm using my laptop as well as my big screen to be able to play the game on it," said Trappier.

"I ordered the food from several restaurants. I'm going to the party place to order tablecloths, and to get balloons. I really want to make it festive."

Trappier, a formerly homeless mother, said this huge sporting event unites people, which is especially meaningful for this group.

“I want to them sit down and laugh, forget about their troubles, and just enjoy the game," said Trappier.

The watch party starts at 6 p.m. Any resident experiencing homelessness can join in. Masks are mandatory.
