PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Governor-elect Josh Shapiro has filled several appointments in his cabinet, two with longtime ties to Philadelphia-area public service.
He tapped Uri Monson, the former chief financial officer of the School District of Philadelphia, and Jennifer Selber, Pennsylvania executive deputy attorney general, to lead as budget secretary and the governor’s general counsel, respectively.
Monson has served as schools deputy superintendent for operations since October, working as the CFO for six years prior. He worked with Shapiro when he was a Montgomery County commissioner, aiding also as the CFO for the county between 2012 and 2016. Previously, he was the assistant budget director for the City of Philadelphia.
Selber joined Shapiro in the state AG’s office in 2017, leading the Criminal Law Division. For nearly 20 years beforehand, she worked in the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, most recently acting as chief of the Homicide Unit.
The incoming governor also appointed Larry Hailsham Jr. as his executive deputy chief of staff. The Pittsburgh native led Shapiro’s gubernatorial campaign.
Hailsham previously assisted Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey as his special assistant and his reelection campaign coordinator, as well as President Joe Biden during his presidential campaign as his political director of Pennsylvania.
“These dedicated public servants will help us meet the challenges facing our Commonwealth while upholding the highest standards of ethics and integrity,” Shapiro said in a statement. “Jen demonstrated extraordinary judgment in the Office of Attorney General and her management skills are of the highest caliber – I have complete confidence and trust in her ability to serve as General Counsel. Uri is one of the sharpest minds in Pennsylvania – he has led the School District of Philadelphia into an unparalleled period of fiscal stability and he was instrumental in turning around Montgomery County’s finances as my CFO when we kept taxes low and grew our economy.
“Finally, Larry knows Pennsylvania better than almost anyone, and his expertise day in and day out at the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and throughout this campaign has helped build broad coalitions and get things done.”
