Pa. gubernatorial candidate Gerow investigated in fatal turnpike crash

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A candidate for governor of Pennsylvania was involved in an accident this week that killed a man riding a motorcycle.

A Pennsylvania State Police investigation has confirmed Republican Charlie Gerow was behind the wheel of the Mercedes-Benz seen by witnesses dragging a motorcycle on the turnpike, but his campaign maintains he did not cause the crash.

The accident shut down the Pennsylvania Turnpike for seven hours late Wednesday into Thursday. A witness told investigators he saw a motorcycle wedged under a car. Sparks flew as it continued on for miles near the King of Prussia interchange.

Authorities in Chester County identified the victim as 30-year-old Logan Carl Abbott of Bradford County.

A spokesperson for Gerow released a statement saying he did not cause the accident and that he wasn't injured.

Gerow said he was advised not to discuss the matter, but in a statement said he looks forward to the state police completing the investigation. He added he is confident it will confirm he was not the cause of the accident.

There is no word from his team on how this might impact his campaign for governor.
