PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Pennsylvania Department of Health is rolling out the state’s first-ever mobile COVID-19 vaccination unit.
The Community-Accessible Testing and Education unit, or CATE, hit the streets last August, providing COVID-19 testing and education to Black and Brown communities. Now, it will offer vaccines.
CATE will make stops in 66 counties across Pennsylvania, especially in hard-to-reach communities.
“When you present people the access and opportunity by meeting people where they are, the success is phenomenal,” said George Fernandez, founder and CEO of Latino Connection.
The group will lead the effort to administer thousands of vaccinations each week via mobile units, which will include multilingual access to services and information.
“A total of 120 vaccination events will take place across the commonwealth. Also, 100 education events will take place at bodegas and corner stores,” he said.
As of Tuesday, April 13, all Pennsylvanians over the age of 16 will be eligible for a vaccine.
Beginning next week, Pennsylvanians who want to schedule a mobile vaccine appointment can do so at catemobileunit.com.
Some upcoming CATE events are taking place in Overbrook Park on April 22 and in Wynnefield on April 28, both 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
