PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A collective of booksellers and booklovers have teamed up with the city to create the first-ever Philadelphia Bookstore Map, all in an effort to spread the word about Philly’s abundance of independent bookstores.

The handpainted map features more than 40 brick-and-mortar bookstores. People can get a free copy at any bookstore or Free Library of Philadelphia location.

Philly artist Henry Crane painted and designed the map to capture the uniqueness of the city’s bookstore scene.

“They each carry something special about them that makes them one of a kind,” he said.

Crane hopes the grassroots project becomes a way for neighbors and friends to connect.

“Books can give you information and knowledge, but I think it’s really meaningful to meet other people that way,” he said.

Regardless of size or store prominence, Crane painted each store in watercolor. And a detailed description and contact information accompanies each.
