PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — 2022 marked the third consecutive year of record gun violence levels in Philadelphia.
According to data released from Philly's Office of the Controller, there were 514 homicides last year – an 8% decrease from 2021.
More than 2,000 people were shot.
Of the more than 2,000, there were 1,802 victims of nonfatal gun violence and 471 victims of fatal shootings. Nearly 10% of those victims were under the age of 18.
Authorities say most of the homicides were in result of arguments, drugs or domestic violence motives.
Police say they cleared a little less than half of the cases, meaning, someone has been arrested.
Gunfire, for the most part, was concentrated in North Central and West Philly.
Police said they took about 6,300 firearms off the streets last year, which is more than they did in 2021.
They say they will continue their battle with gun violence by adding more patrol officers to districts and re-aligning some tactical strategies.
