PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia James Beard award-winning Iron Chef is offering Labor Day weekend grilling tips, all while he juggles several new culinary projects.

During this last big grilling weekend of the summer, Philly celebrity chef Jose Garces offers suggestions on how to make his famous burgers.

“I like to cook on a griddle, because with an open grill sometimes all the juices escape and you can’t get a nice seal,” said Garces.

“If you have a grill, you can put a griddle or a cast-iron pan on it. You’ll still get the smoky flavor from the grill.”

He says another key to top notch burgers involves the meat.

“We’re actually offering our custom grind for everyone to purchase at Village Whiskey for your perfect Labor Day cookout,” he said.

Meanwhile, Garces is expanding his Buena Onda restaurant.

“We recently opened in Rittenhouse Square at 20th and Sansom, and we’re opening in Radnor this month,” Garces explained. “We’re really excited about launching a national franchise.”

He’s also relaunching Garces Trading Company with a new location at the Cira Center.

“It’s a marketplace, gourmet shop, wine shop, [with] fresh salads,” he said.

In October, he’ll be kicking off Garces Eats at the Wells Fargo Center, just in time for the 2022-2023 NHL and NBA seasons.

“It’s a place where I’m going to develop and create new handheld stadium and event venue foods,” said Garces. “It’s meant to be kind of like a food lab or a food test kitchen, but available to our concert and game-goers.”
