Man killed a block from home, several in hospital on Sunday marred by gun violence

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man is dead and several others are in Philadelphia hospitals after a string of gun violence incidents around the city on Sunday. In one case, a man was killed at a corner store around the block from his house. In another, the suspected shooter was critically wounded.

Around noon, Jimmy Rodriguez, 23, was shot and killed in Hunting Park. Officers from the 25th District responded to a 911 call about a person with a gun inside a store on North Seventh Street near Wingohocking Street, just around the block from where Rodriguez lived.

Police say he had been shot several times, in his head and legs, and he was pronounced dead at Temple University Hospital. There are no arrests, and no weapon was recovered.

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., inside Neighborhood Market, at the corner of Frankford Avenue and Arrott Street, police say a 23-year-old store employee was shot once in the left side of his body. He was taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.

A 28-year-old man, who is being held by police as a suspect, was shot in the left leg and the left side of his body. He is also in critical condition at the hospital.

Another double shooting happened about an hour later, around 8:30 p.m., near the intersection of Wayne Avenue and West Logan Street in Germantown. According to police reports, a 49-year-old man shot in his left leg, and an 18-year-old man shot in his right leg, are both in stable condition at the hospital. No weapons were recovered, and no arrests have been made.

Later, around 9:30 p.m., officers from the 2nd District responded to a 911 call about a shooting inside Wild Crab Restaurant on Cottman Avenue, about a block away from Roosevelt Boulevard, in Northeast Philadelphia. A 31-year-old man was shot in his chest, back and right leg. He is in critical condition at a nearby hospital, according to the latest reports. There was no arrest, nor were any weapons recovered.

Additionally, on Saturday night, 25-year-old Devon Harris-Harper was gunned down near East Falls Rock Gym on Scotts Lane. He was hit in the back and arms. A 16-year-old was also shot seven times Saturday night but is expected to survive.
