Rain couldn't stop Mummers' Fancy Brigade finale

Though the parade was delayed, the Philadelphia New Year's Day show still went on in the Pennsylvania Convention Center

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It was not the day for an outdoor parade, but indoors, the Mummers show went on at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

An announcement was made to wear masks at all times, and then the 2022 New Year's Fancy Brigade finale show began after 5 p.m.

12 clubs each performed in a four-and-a-half-minute Broadway-style production.

"We wouldn't miss this for the world. Our cousin is in the Shooting Stars. We like to come down here and root him on," said John Mullinaux of Northeast Philadelphia.

So, for the uninitiated, what is a Mummer?

"A mummer is a guy who likes to wear costumes and dance a lot," 7-year-old Quinn said.

These same dancing Mummers will perform in the delayed Mummers Parade along Broad Street starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The indoor fancy brigade finale shows were established 25 years ago for tourist packages guaranteeing a Mummers show regardless of whether the weather cooperates or not.
