PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsadio) — Barbara, a KYW Newsradio listener, wrote in with a question about a parking problem she is having with her neighbors.
She is frustrated by several tenants in her apartment complex who are taking up valuable parking spots with cars that have expired registration stickers and have not moved in months. The rental office has not taken action, and she asks if she can donate the abandoned cars to Goodwill.
Barbara, I like the altruism of giving cars to charity. However, you can’t donate someone else's car without their permission. You also don't have the legal authority to get a car towed from a lot you don't own, so you don’t have much recourse.
However, here's what you can do. Check your lease to see if it requires a tenant's car to have up-to-date registration stickers. If so, let the office know that those tenants are in violation of their lease — and that it is affecting yours.
