PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are getting sizable grants to better equip officers, help reduce crime and enhance safety.
Maureen Rush, president of the Philadelphia Police Foundation, announced four grants totaling $500,000, which was used to purchase six mounted horses, 12 patrol motorcycles, 80 fully equipped police bicycles and three bomb-sniffing canines.
“The bomb canine dogs undergo 1,000 hours of training, so they are highly trained before they hit the street,” said Rush.

“The presence of these majestic animals not only enhances our capacity to manage large-scale events and maintain crowd control, but it also strengthens our community relations and expands our patrol coverage across all communities in Philadelphia,” said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.
The motorcycles will be used by both the Highway Patrol and the PPD Traffic Unit. The bikes will be used for enhanced patrols in commercial corridors.

“These purchases align perfectly with my vision and strategy for violence reduction in Philadelphia making the department stronger and the city safer,” Outlaw added.
