PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police are getting sizable grants to better equip officers, help reduce crime and enhance safety.

Maureen Rush, president of the Philadelphia Police Foundation, announced four grants totaling  $500,000, which was used to purchase six mounted horses, 12 patrol motorcycles, 80 fully equipped police bicycles and three bomb-sniffing canines.

“The bomb canine dogs undergo 1,000 hours of training, so they are highly trained before they hit the street,” said Rush.
