PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Students in the School District of Philadelphia will be heading back to class after Labor Day this fall, according to calendars approved Thursday night in a meeting of the Philadelphia Board of Education.
In recent years, the district has often started the school year in August, leading to school closures because of extreme heat. Superintendent Tony Watlington noted in a statement that, while the 2024-25 school year will start before Labor Day because of how the days fall, the district will strive to begin the school year after Labor Day when possible.
The school district said feedback from parents, staffers and community members indicated a preference to close schools for religious and cultural celebrations. Indigenous Peoples' Day and Veterans Day will no longer be school holidays under the calendars approved for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years.
The calendars also make the day before Thanksgiving a half-day.
