PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Sixty of Philadelphia’s best teachers are being recognized with the Lindback Foundation’s annual award for outstanding educators — the highest honor a teacher in Philadelphia can get.
It is given to Philadelphia School District teachers who serve as role models and create positive learning environments for students.
Among the winners is Alexis McNear, an entrepreneurship teacher at Northeast High School. He also serves as the adviser of the school’s Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) program.
“We’re successful in athletics, drama, theater — all that great stuff. But when it comes to DECA, that’s their sport,” he praised.
He said he encourages his students to innovate.
“I want you to think about businesses besides Burger King or your hairdresser or your nail salon,” he told students. “I want you to think a little bit bigger.”
McNear, a six-year veteran at Northeast High, will receive his award at a ceremony Tuesday evening. Each awardee also receives a $3,500 prize.
McNear, who earned his master’s degree last week, said he’ll use it to help pay his Temple University tuition.
