Philly tour groups looking for more guides, and will help certify them

Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides is searching for more guides as holiday tour business picks up

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Walking tours in Philadelphia are taking off in popularity, and a non-profit organization that trains and certifies guides is looking for applicants.

There are all sorts of tours offered in the region, but how do you know what your being told is true?

The Association of Philadelphia Tour Guides was founded in 2008 to ensure a high-quality experience for visitors, and it's looking for more guides.

“This is an incredible building. 750 rooms. This is where the mayors office is," said Toni Levitt, a tour guide, board member and vice president of APT, during an outdoor Christmas tour.

She said APT has a tour guide education and certification program.

“It’s so extensive," said Levitt.

"Everything, everything. Architecture. Of course, the history of the buildings. What does this person have to do with that building, and what was the first? Then they show you pictures of buildings that you are supposed to identify.“

Levitt says APT is always looking for tour guides.

She also says when taking a tour it may be a good idea to check to see if the guide is certified.

There are nearly 200 APT-certified tour guides in the city. For more information on the program go to phillyguides.org.
