PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Young people from across Philadelphia are being encouraged to better themselves and their neighborhoods with a series of youth-led community events confronting tough issues. The city launched its first-ever PHL Youth Week on Monday.

“You see a lot of different obstacles and hardships that young males and girls go through. There’s not a lot of guidance,” said Milaj Robinson, who was born and raised in North Philadelphia’s Logan neighborhood.

Now Robinson says he’s using his time as an intern with the Mayor’s Office of Black Male Engagement to help others during PHL Youth Week.

“By being the example and being the change, instead of begging for the change and wishing for the change,” Robinson said.

Jeanette Babwidinsi, with the Mayor’s Office of Youth Engagement, says they’re hosting forums, fairs and events to help make kids aware of options and resources they have to help them down the right path.

“We wanted to take everyday into an issue that is affecting them, from education to health and wellness to anti violence, and public safety, small business and public safety. We’re running the gamut, and we’re excited.”
