Philly school workers union ratifies new contract

New deal was agreed upon just before August 31 contract expiration date

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — After months of bargaining, the union representing School District of Philadelphia workers says it ratified a new four-year contract.

SEIU 32BJ members accepted the new four-year contract in a vote held Saturday at Benjamin Franklin High School.

The contract was agreed upon last month before the August 31 expiration of the current two-year contract.

The union says the contract contains historic wage increases, and $2 million in funding for training programs. The contract also maintains pension and health benefits, and protects sick leave and paid vacation.

"This contract also honors the enormous contributions and sacrifices that 32BJ school workers have made to the Philadelphia School District over the past decade, including risking their lives to keep kids in school throughout the pandemic," said union leader John Bynum.

Bynum also thanked Mayor Jim Kenney for joining the bargaining sessions to support union members.
