PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Politicians grappling with mental health issues should come as no surprise – think of the pressures and demands of the gig.

However, what may come as a shock is how few elected officials seem willing to share their struggles and the impact that decision has on both them and others.

That's why Ann Rosen Spector believes there could be power in Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman's recent decision to buck past precedent, go public about his clinical depression diagnosis and check himself into the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Feb. 15.

KYW’s Matt Leon spoke with Spector, a Philadelphia-based psychologist, about the signs of clinical depression, why diagnosing it can be tricky and how helpful it is when people in the public eye openly discuss and address mental health.
