PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Thanks to a broadcast partnership between Rowan and Sixers’ G League Affiliate the Delaware Blue Coats, Rowan University junior Kayla Santiago has the opportunity to develop her talent as a play-by-play announcer.

Santiago, a Glassboro native, is carving her own path in an industry dominated by men, and she’s having a blast along the way.

“It was a fantastic experience,” she said. “That is what I want to do. I’ve done a bunch of play-by-play for Rowan in all different sports, but being able to do it for a professional team was just next level.”

She’s making a name for herself, too. Santiago was selected to do play-by-play for the G League championship game, and she also won a scholarship from the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association.

“It kind of comes full circle and makes you think ‘wow somebody does see what I’m doing,’ ” she added.

Santiago is already looking for her next opportunity and hopes to follow the footsteps of female broadcasters like Cubs announcer Beth Mowins.

“I would love to get a baseball internship this summer doing play-by-play so I can have kind of a winter sport and summer sport practicing my role because I don’t want to take any time off.”
