Salvation Army has more 'dire' need than normal for kids' Christmas gifts. Here's how to help

Camden location aims to give 7,000 gifts for the holidays

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — As people scramble to make sure gifts are under the tree on time this year, so are many non-profits in the business of giving to those in most need, including the Salvation Army.

The goal this year for their location at the Salvation Army's Kroc Center in Camden is 7,000 gifts for 3,500 children.

"We're only providing two gifts per child, which in the scheme of things is really not a lot, but they're so grateful for it," said Salvation Army Captain Pamela Maynor. She said demand has tripled as families struggle.

"Fifteen hundred families have requested help for Christmas; 70% of those families have an annual income of $20,000 or less, so the need is dire."

They believe they will reach their goal, as the number of people willing to help has also increased.

Captain Keith Maynor says time is of the essence as supply and shipping issues plague many retailers.

"We're asking for help from anyone in the community that has a resource, or a way to help us secure a donation and help us find a toy for a child in need."

The Maynors say many of the families are dealing with loss of parents or cargivers due to COVID-19, along with job loss and lack of child care.

Toys for Tots is also facing a similar rise in demand and gift drives are kicking off earlier for them this year as well.
