PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Phillies rolled out their 2023 Wall of Fame inductees Tuesday.
This year’s class consists of newly elected Hall of Famer Scott Rolen, as well as late former General Manager John Quinn and Former Owner Ruly Carpenter.
Rolen played parts of seven seasons at third base for the Phillies in the late 1990s and early 2000s, winning National League Rookie of the Year in 1997. His playing days with the Phillies didn't end well, as he was traded to the Cardinals in 2002. But Rolen says his days in Philadelphia taught him how to play the game, hustle and play hard.
He said in a statement that he is humbled and honored to join the Wall of Fame.
“My years in Philadelphia – I wouldn’t trade for anything. It taught me how to play the game, how to hustle and play hard. I’m grateful to Philadelphia and the Phillies for the important role they played in my career.”
Quinn was the Phillies' general manager from 1959 to 1972, acquiring many of the core players who were on the 1980 World Championship team. He constructed the talented 1964 team that infamously collapsed late in the season and was also in charge when the Phillies fully integrated. They were the last National League team to integrate.
And Carpenter was the team's president during their first golden era of baseball in the late 1970's, culminating with the 1980 championship.
The Wall of Fame ceremony is August 12 at Citizens Bank Park. Rolen is unable to attend because of a scheduling conflict but he will be honored September 22 at the ballpark.
