Off-duty security guard, teen wounded in shootout outside Cobbs Creek beer store

A bulletproof vest likely saved the guard’s life

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An off-duty security guard and a teen were wounded in a shootout Wednesday night in Cobbs Creek, where more than 40 shots were fired in all.

It happened at 9 p.m. outside a beer store at 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue. According to initial police reports, a security guard, who does not work at the beer store, entered the store after his shift elsewhere.

When he left, police say three men confronted him, one of them pointing a gun at him. The guard then took out his gun and started to fire.

“The three men, however, at least one or possibly more, also fired at him, so that it turned into a shootout,” said Police Inspector D.F. Pace.

The guard was hit four times, but police say the one shot that could have possibly killed him was thwarted by the bulletproof vest he was wearing. He was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition.

About a half-hour later, police learned a 17-year-old who was shot in the arm during the shootout was driven to the hospital for treatment. Police aren’t exactly sure what his exact role is yet, if any, in this shootout, or if he even knew the three men who were shooting.

The front window of the beer store was shattered. The store is in a shopping center, with plenty of other businesses and surveillance cameras, which police are combing through as their investigation continues.
