PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A SEPTA bus crashed into a building in Center City Tuesday night — the fourth accident on a SEPTA bus or trolley in five days.
The latest incident happened at 15th and Walnut streets just before 9 p.m. A Route 31 bus hopped the curb and hit a building, according to a SEPTA spokesperson. The driver somehow lost control.
The driver, who was treated for minor injuries, was the only person on the bus at the time. No one on the street, sidewalk or inside the building was hurt.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
This crash followed an incident in Upper Darby, Delaware County on Monday. One trolley rear-ended another, transit officials said. Both operators and five passengers sustained minor injuries.
And on Sunday, a bus hit a pole in Philadelphia, minorly injuring four passengers.
The most serious crash took place on Friday. One bus rear-ended another on Roosevelt Boulevard in Rhawnhurst, according to transit officials. A 72-year-old woman, later identified as Siu Nam Mak, was killed, and more than a dozen people were hurt.
All four incidents are under investigation. SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said they are not connected.
“Unfortunate coincidence,” he said. “We don’t have any one systemic issue.”
In response, SEPTA has started sending safety officials and supervisors to all the depots to make sure everyone is on the same page — something the transit agency usually does a few times a year.
“It’s an opportunity to reinforce some of those basic but very important practices,” said Busch. “We’ve been doing that since early this week and that will continue through this week.”
