PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A $3 million settlement has been approved in a class action suit involving the now-closed Glen Mills Schools.

The Chester County Intermediate Unit was one of several defendants involved, and approved the settlement on Wednesday.

According to a release, the lawsuit was filed in 2019, around the time the Delaware County facility was closed by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services.

It was in response of alleged abuse, civil rights violations, discrimination, and intimidation against students by Glen Mills Schools staff and leaders.

The suit said Black students, students with disabilities and special education needs were especially impacted by the abuse.

CCIU served as the local education agency under contract with Glen Mills Schools.

Former Glen Mills Schools students could potentially be eligible for cash, reimbursement of education, or both. Eligible former students would fall under two categories: Those who attended Glen Mills Schools before April 11, 2017 and those who attended after that date but were under 20 years old on April 11, 2019.

Former students who wish to apply for relief can click on this website for information, e-mail Help@GlenMillsSettlement.org or call 267-515-6853.
