PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — An armed man was shot by a security officer outside the federal courthouse in Center City Tuesday morning after authorities say he parked his van illegally and threatened the guard.
Around 9:30 a.m., police said a white van was parked illegally outside the courthouse on Seventh Street, between Market and Filbert streets. When a court security officer approached the driver to tell him he couldn't park there, the man brandished two edged weapons — some sort of blade or knife.
The security officer told him multiple times to drop the weapons but he continued to advance. He discharged his gun several times, striking the suspect all over his body.
"The court security officer gave multiple verbal commands to the suspect to drop his weapons," said U.S. Marshals spokesperson Rob Clark. "Those commands were not complied to, and the suspect continued to advance toward the court security officer. That court security officer feared for his life and discharged his weapon multiple times."
The man, who is 40 years old, was taken to the hospital for surgery. The exact state of his condition is unknown.
Officials did not provide details about exactly what the man's weapons were, or what he said to the officers.
The FBI is handling the investigation.
