CHESTER, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Eight teenagers were injured, one critically, in a shooting incident on Sunday night in the parking lot of Subaru Park, according to police.
All victims are between the ages of 17 and 18. Six were hit with gunfire, and two were injured in the course of running from the scene, according to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.
All but one have been treated for their injuries and released from the hospital, according to police, who say a 17-year-old boy remains in critical condition with a gunshot wound.
Police were called to an area of the parking lot near Delaware Avenue and Norris Street after gunfire erupted around 11:20 p.m.
Police said the crowd numbered in the dozens, and Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky said they were not aware there would be such a gathering there.
“When the group went down there, they started going on Facebook live, started doing social media, and more people did start to pull up,” Gretsky said.
Delaware County D.A. Jack Stollsteimer said the teens had gathered outside the stadium to celebrate the holiday weekend and the end of the school year.
“Unfortunately, the presence of guns in the crowd turned this gathering into a chaotic and dangerous event,” Stollsteimer said. “We know at least three guns were fired and over 50 shell casings have been recovered.”
Stollsteimer said the incident is particularly disturbing because a law enforcement-community partnership in the City of Chester has made in the last two years in reducing gun homicides by 60% and the overall number of shootings by 46% over the last two years.
Subaru Park is the home stadium of the Philadelphia Union. The minor league Philadelphia Union II and Columbus Crew 2 had played a match there earlier Sunday night. The mayor’s office tells our news partners NBC 10 that the shooting was unrelated.
Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting. There have been no arrests.
The D.A. emphasized that anyone with information about the incident should call the Chester Police Department at 610-447-7931, or the County’s Criminal Investigation Division at 610-891-4700.
This is a developing story and will be updated as new information comes from police.
