Sorority focuses MLK Day of Service on Chester, where Dr. King once lived

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A group of women in Chester is making sure to use the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service to make a difference for others, in a community where Dr. King lived when he was completing seminary school.

Wearing their signature pink and green colors and carrying dozens of meals, women from the Tau Delta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority braved the cold and rain to deliver warm meals.

"We are going to feed the homeless at the Salvation Army. We are also going to feed our seniors in the city of Chester," said Magan Davis with the sorority.

She called MLK Day far from a day off of work, but a chance to work in a different capacity.

"It’s so important to give back, especially to a community that has given so much to us. I think it sets an example that we’re all in this together, especially in these times," she said.

"Doing this is not a big thing. It doesn't take much of our time, but it creates an amazing impact and that's what we're about."

Janee Jones, another member of the sorority, added that they want to deliver a bigger message when they deliver the meals.

"There’s a lot going on today, as far as social justice in the black community and many communities, and it’s important that people around us know that this is what he was fighting for," said Jones.

"We just can’t let it go astray."

Dr. King lived in Chester from 1948-51 while attending school at Crozier Theological Seminary.
