Dunkin' Donuts murder suspect charged after arrest in Wilmington

Police say he is main suspect in at least 4 murders

UPDATED: June 9, 5:11 p.m.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia District Attorney's Office has charged a man they believe shot and killed a Dunkin’ Donuts manager in North Philadelphia on Saturday. He may also be tied to a half dozen other shootings in both Philadelphia and Delaware.

39-year-old Keith Gibson was arrested in Delaware for an armed robbery Tuesday morning. Police say he robbed a Rite Aid in Wilmington around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday and shot at one of the store clerks. Gibson was tracked down and arrested.

Police say he was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying a loaded gun, ammunition, a knife and narcotics.

Delaware officials say Gibson is facing a list of charges, including robbery and gun offenses. He is behind bars on $305,000 cash bail.

While in custody, Philadelphia police questioned Gibson in connection with the shooting death of Christine Lugo, the manager of the Fairhill Dunkin' who was fatally shot over the weekend, as well as other cases.

Lugo was shot and killed while opening up the Fairhill Street and Lehigh Avenue store early Saturday morning, even after handing over money to the suspect.

Police pushed out surveillance video, and Chief Inspector Frank Vanore says the first call came from Elsmere, Delaware.

"Their authorities had claimed they reviewed our pictures and they had a murder investigation that occurred on May 15," said Vanore, referring to a case where a cell phone store employee was fatally shot in the head during a robbery.

Officials believe Gibson could be the shooter in several other killings, including a double homicide in Germantown in January.

"Both males are in the back room, both males are shot. There’s actually a lot of money on location, so I am not sure if that was a robbery or what it is. So there (are) questions we have still, (to) see if he links to this," said Vanore about the Germantown case.

"No firearm ballistics left at the scene. I was at that scene, kind of chaotic. It was a store that just opened, kind of similar to the other cases you see in Philadelphia and Delaware."

He is also a person of interest in the murder of his mother in February.

Initially, police said that case had very circumstantial evidence.

"Now, we have a firearm recovered, we do have some ballistic evidence up, obviously with the bullet that hit his mom, so we are seeing if we can link him that way," said Vanore.

Police are working with Delaware officials to put together a timeline and build each case.

“The crimes we allege Keith Gibson committed on June 5th are shocking. We are heartbroken for Ms. Christine Lugo and for everyone who is grieving her loss," District Attorney Larry Krasner said in a statement.

"All of us, from delivery drivers to store managers, deserve to be safe at work at all hours, and to come home to our loved ones."

Gibson has prior manslaughter and gun convictions in Delaware, where he served time, and probation and parole violations. He remains in Wilmington.
