14-year-old killed, 15-year-old shot in face in Summerdale drive-by

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two teenagers were shot, one of them killed, after bullets flew in a driveby Friday afternoon in Philadelphia's Summerdale section.

"This afternoon we had a report of gunshots in the area. Officers arrived on scene, they found a 14-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound," Capt. John Walker said.

The boy had been shot in the chest just before 4 p.m. on the 800 block of Bridge Street. He was rushed to the hospital, where he died.

The boy’s family identified him to NBC10 as Robert Yocum.

"During the course of their investigation, they found out a 15-year-old female was also shot," Walker added.

The girl had been hit in her right eye. She is in critical condition but stabilized.

Police are looking for the driver of a blue Chevrolet. They say the suspect drove up Bridge Street and began firing into the porches of homes, hitting the teens.

Police are still investigating a motive. It’s unclear who was the intended target and why. They ask anyone with information to contact detectives at 215-686-3334.

“[The car] travels down the street. Window rolls down. They fire onto the porches of the homes, striking the two kids,” Walker said. “We just need the public’s help to understand that this can’t be normalized, No. 1, and that we should not tolerate this. We will walk with you, we will be your partner. But we need people to be engaged with their kids, engaged with their communities.”

So far, there are no arrests.
