PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia detectives are investigating Monday night’s shooting death of 16-year-old Shawn Grant whom police say was shot once before in December 2021.
Grant was found along Diamond Street near 28th Street in Strawberry Mansion. He was shot four times in the chest, back and leg area.
Grant was a student at One Bright Ray Community High School. He had no juvenile record.
Investigators are still working on solving Grant’s killing and believe there were at least two shooters involved. There could be up to four suspects. Chief Inspector Scott Small said one of the suspects fired more than 60 shots.
“This is a neighborhood,” Small emphasized. “For someone to fire 63 shots … that’s a whole lot of shots. You don't normally see 63 spent shell casings at a shooting scene, especially in a residential neighborhood like this.”
Police have been speaking with anyone who knew Grant, and are still searching the area for video. Detectives urge anyone who may have information about the shooting to call them, even if the tips are anonymous.
More than two dozen kids, including Grant, have been killed in homicides in Philadelphia so far this year. That’s on par with mid-July 2021, and last year saw a record number of total homicides in the city – most of them from fatal shootings.
As the city nears the 300 homicide mark for this year, roughly 10% of the victims are under 18 years old. Nearly 60% of homicide victims are between18 and 34, and about 30% are over 35.
