TUCKERTON (KYW Newsradio) — It wasn’t a big one, but it was noticed.
A small earthquake rocked a borough in Ocean County, New Jersey.
The United States Geological Survey said a 2.4 earthquake struck at 7:52 a.m. just south of Tuckerton. No damages or injuries were reported, but a lot of shaking was reported.
Some residents in Tuckerton compared the brief quake to the sound and vibrations of construction crews out on the roads.
“It is road construction season in New Jersey,” said one resident.
Phil Reed was working at his desk at the borough’s hall.
He thought the earthquake was heavy machinery working on an ongoing landscaping project here.
“There a rumble, and really what we had here was a back hoe scraping the front parking lot, and it felt the same," Reed said.
"So I thought, "Let me move the car before I get blocked in here, and they dig the back parking lot out,' and...no construction.”
New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Pat Callahan said this event serves as a reminder to the public to be ready, just in case.
“I know with a hurricane or snow storms, that we usually have we get pretty advanced notice on those, but earthquakes and tornadoes pretty much come without any warning at all," said Callahan.
"I just steer everybody, as we always do, to prepare your family for all hazards and all emergencies.”
