UPDATE: 7/31/22, 11:32 a.m.
CALN TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A 3-year old boy is in critical condition after being shot inside a vehicle parked at a Chester County shopping center.
Caln Township Police Chief Joseph Elias told KYW Newsradio the child was inside a Dodge Durango parked around 11:45 a.m. at the Caln Plaza along East Lincoln Highway near Caln Road.
The child was hit once in the torso with a round fired from a 9mm handgun, which was found at the scene.
Elias said the child was transported to Paoli Hospital then airlifted to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
He said detectives have been talking with the boy's father and several witnesses. Surveillance tape from nearby businesses is also being looked at.
Elias also said it’s still unclear if the boy was left unattended inside the vehicle or if his father was in the vehicle when the gun discharged.
No arrests have been made.
Caln Township police said it's the second firearm discharge inside a parking lot in less than a week. An adult last week was hit in the leg when his gun accidentally went off while he was getting in his car.
