PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A tow truck driver was shot during an attempted robbery in Southwest Philadelphia Monday night, according to police.

When the driver’s shift ended around 11 p.m., he parked his truck as usual on 72nd Street, not far from Cobbs Creek Parkway. But as he was doing so, a group of four men approached him.

“They approached [the victim] as he exited his tow truck and they announced a robbery,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “And for some reason, the robbery escalated into a shooting. We know four shots were fired.”

The 40-year-old victim was hit three times — in the leg, arm and stomach, police said. He was alert when officers arrived and he was able to tell police that his attackers appeared to be in their teens or early 20s and wore dark clothing.

He was taken to the hospital, where police said he was in critical condition.

Police are scouring surveillance footage from the neighborhood to try to identify the four people involved in this attempted robbery and shooting.
