Trial underway for man accused of buying gun, killing ex at her Huntingdon Valley house

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — William Torres, a 61-year-old Maryland man, is on trial in Montgomery County for allegedly buying a shotgun, then driving an hour-and-a-half to Huntingdon Valley to kill his 58-year-old ex-girlfriend.

On the first day of testimony Monday, prosecutors called the victim’s son as the first witness.

Alex Edwards said on November 18, 2019, he was pulling in the garage of the Dale Road home he shared with his mom, Jeanne Edwards, when he heard a “pop.”

He’d soon learn that was a gunshot, but at the time, he thought he possibly ran over something as he pulled in the garage.

When he walked around his car to check, he said his mother’s ex-boyfriend, Torres, opened the door to the house.

Alex said that while holding a shotgun, Torres told him, “Your mother ruined my life,” then ran off.

While calling for his mother, Alex said he went inside and locked the doors. He found her between the couch and the coffee table, shot twice with a shotgun.

Prosecutors told the jury that Jeanne Edwards and Torres had broken up, but Torres couldn’t accept it.

They say this is clearly first-degree murder, as Torres drove more than hour to Edwards’ house shortly after he bought a shotgun near his home in Elkton, Maryland.

The defense concedes Torres shot and killed Edwards, but his lawyer, Carrie Allman, told the jury that Torres bought the shotgun and he drove to Edwards’ home with the intent of hurting himself, not her.

“Outcome does not show intent, and an accident is not a murder,” Allman said.

Torres is charged with first and third-degree murder for allegedly killing Edwards. The trial is expected to wrap up this week.
