PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's the end of an era for a Mainline institution, as Villanova University says it is in the process of buying Cabrini University.
Villanova sent a letter to students, staff, and faculty Friday saying Cabrini was battling severe financial issues, including decreased enrollment and an increase in competition with other colleges.
They were searching for a similar college that could help with financial issues and reached out to Villanova – a university that shares the same Roman Catholic values as Cabrini and equally believes in "educating the mind and heart."
Villanova said that they are “working to ensure that Cabrini students, faculty, staff and alumni are well-supported through this difficult time.”
Adding that they will “assist Cabrini in providing counseling and resources to support students in the development of individualized transfer plans to other institutions to complete their degrees.”
It isn't clear what will become of Cabrini's campus, but Helen Drinan, president of Cabrini, says much of the campus will be preserved. More information will be released once both boards approve the agreement.
Cabrini's final graduating class will be in May 2024.
