PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Gov. Tom Wolf shed a bit of light on the plan for Pennsylvania’s allocation of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The official announcement will come on Wednesday, and it sounds like it will target teachers.
A plan to prioritize teachers for the vaccine was leaked in the form of an email from a Republican state lawmaker on the legislative task force. The email says Pennsylvania is in line for 94,000 doses of the J&J vaccine and will prioritize teachers with the help of PEMA and the National Guard.
Lindsay Mauldin with the Department of Health spent the better part of a half-hour fending off questions about J&J and teachers. Wolf says the state will use the vaccine on frontline workers and will focus on schools.
Wolf said there was one more meeting with the task force, but he says they all agree J&J is the better option as compared to the two-dose Moderna or Pfizer vaccines for front-line workers.
"We want to do that as quickly as possible," he said, "and so a one-dose vaccine has a unique role to play, I think, and I think the task force does, in doing that."
Asked if teachers would only qualify if their school was open full-time, Wolf said that is part of the conversation, and full details will be given in the formal announcement.
