PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A South Philadelphia teenager will face murder charges, accused of stabbing his 64-year-old stepmother to death Thursday night. Police say the 16-year-old stabbed the woman with a butcher knife from the kitchen, and then injured their family cat.
Officers called to the home on 20th Street, near Wolf Street and West Passyunk Avenue, just after midnight found the victim in the upstairs hallway with several stab wounds, most in the neck.
“Just a foot from her head is a bloody knife,” Chief Inspector Scott Small said Friday. “It’s got about a 10- or 12-inch blade.”
Police said the 16-year-old, who lived with her in the home, had blood on his hands. He was taken to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with a severe hand wound, in police custody.
Investigators are unsure what prompted the fatal interaction and are awaiting toxicology results to see if drugs played a role.
The teen will face charges including murder, possession of instrument in a crime and two counts of animal cruelty. The cat is expected to survive.
