PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The parent company of Jeep has recalled hundreds of thousands of SUVs because of a fire risk.

Automaker Stellantis has told owners of nearly 220,000 Jeep Cherokees worldwide to park them outdoors and away from other vehicles, because the power liftgates can catch fire, even when the engines are off.

The company is recalling certain Jeep Cherokees from model years 2014 through 2016.

Water can get into the liftgate control computer, causing an electrical short that can touch off a fire. It's not yet known how many Cherokees have caught fire. In federal filings Tuesday, Stellantis said it isn't aware of injuries, though it has received more than 90 reports, including 23 warranty claims, resulting from the problem.

The company says it hasn’t developed a fix yet. Owners will get notification letters starting June 30. Stellantis says the problem was caught in a routine review of customer data.
